A design system is often treated as a component library. Its real value is in the decisions it makes once so teams don't have to make them again.

Encode decisions, not just components

Document why a pattern exists and when to use it. A button with rules is more useful than ten buttons without them.

Start small

Begin with the patterns your product uses most: typography, colour, spacing, forms. Grow the system as real needs appear.

Treat it as a product

Give the system an owner, a roadmap and a way for teams to request changes.
